Do not tip granules straight into the hole and set the plant on top; direct contact with concentrated product burns new roots. Keep the dust out of eyes and lungs, wear gloves, and wash your hands afterwards. Store sealed and dry, away from children and animals.
High phosphorus for transplants still finding their feet.
Everything a plant does in its first month happens below ground, and phosphorus is what pays for it. This is a fine-grade starter at 9-18-9, ground small enough to blend into the bottom of a planting hole where new roots will actually reach it.
We keep the nitrogen moderate on purpose. A transplant pushed into leaf before it has the roots to support it wilts on the first hot afternoon. Feed the roots first with this, then move onto a balanced or organic feed once the plant is clearly away.
Follow these in order. The rates below are the ones we test to, and going over them will not make anything grow faster.
Add 1 tablespoon for a vegetable transplant, or 1/4 cup for a shrub, to the loose soil at the base of the hole. Mix it thoroughly into that soil so no roots sit directly against undiluted granules.
Set the plant at the same depth it was growing before, backfill, firm gently and water in with at least a gallon per plant. That first soak is what moves the phosphorus into contact with the root ball.
Scatter a light second dose on the surface around the plant three weeks after planting and water it in. After six weeks, switch to a balanced or organic feed for the rest of the season.
